Inch By Inch

David Mallett wrote (and Pete Seeger sang), “Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow” to describe the experience of tending a garden. From time to time as I look out past my backyard to the busy Sisters and Brothers as they weed, mulch, till, water and tend this garden, I can’t help humming that folk song which was so popular when I was young. How remarkable is the change since the last time I shared this view with you. I think St. Benedict would be proud of both the Ora and the Labora that has gone in to the transformation as men and women partner with God in the continuing creation he shares with us. I can’t wait for the tomatoes!

About Selah Seeker

I first became acquainted with the Community of Jesus in 1970 when I was an undergraduate at Brown University, serving a Baptist church in Rhode Island. In 1988 I moved to the Community with my wife, our two daughters, and our son. Today I serve on the clergy staff of the Community. I have made my living working for a residential construction company, as the contract manager and construction supervisor. Since 2001 I have enjoyed acting with Elements Theatre Company, and today, at 61, I am the oldest member of the company. Working with young and vital actors will, I believe, slow my aging process as we encounter the fascinating challenges of our craft together. When I am not at church, on a job site, at the Pastorium, or on the stage, I enjoy playing fingerstyle guitar to our 19-year-old tiger kitty, Raffi.
