Agnes is one of the most popular and universally accepted martyrs of fourth-century Rome. Although little is known about her life, her feast day was celebrated in both the East and the West from early times.
Agnes is often portrayed as a young girl with a lamb at her feet or in her arms, because her name, Agnes, is so similar to the Latin word for lamb, agnus.
She reminds us that a young person can have strong faith and refuse to give in to the pressures of society. She encourages us all to stand so sure on the truth of what God has said to us that no challenge can move us.
