Gregorian Chant: The Eternal Song

Another Aspect of “The Big Picture”
We have always believed that chant belongs to the entire Church! It is one of the premises on which we stand to love and teach the chant. When developing a name for our chant page on Facebook, we wanted to make sure that anyone with a love for chant and desire to learn more, knew that this page was for them. So we came up with the name — “Gregorian Chant is for Everyone — Getting Started/ Learning More.”
A friend showed me this quote from the German Theologian, Dietrich Bonhoffer, as he identified all Christians by what they sing:  “Only he who cries out for the Jews may also sing Gregorian [chant]”
(Woelfel, James W. 1970. Bonhoeffer’s Theology: Classical and Revolutionary. New York: Abingdon Press, p. 248). Here Bonhoffer identifies the church by the song which has helped unite her members for over 2000 years — the chant!  Let us work for that same identification today!

About Cantor

I have been a cantor for over 25 years and an organist for most of my life. Chanting with people at home and across the country is one of my greatest joys. I remember the days of staring at the section of our undergraduate music text thinking to myself "what are all those dots and WHY do I need to know about them?!" Now, 33 years later, I am so grateful that those "dots" have helped teach me many things about God and His love!
