Have you ever gotten a birthday card that says, “Because You’re So Special?” Me either. But I’ve seen them. In fact, we throw the word special around as if it isn’t special at all. My special has to do with considering myself superior: I did it best, I saved the day, I lost ten pounds, my team won–all trivial and ultimately meaningless. In reality (and by definition), special refers to someone held in particular esteem, distinguished by some unique quality, different from what is otherwise usual and worthy of respect.

Jesus, especially at Advent, embodies the true spirit of the word. He comes in the greatest humility to serve with generosity of heart and to love beyond measure.
