Keeping Vigil in anticipation of the Easter Day celebration, we were reminded of the story of Adam and Eve’s disobedience and their subsequent expulsion from the Garden of Eden. The Vigil began Saturday night outside the church building with the lighting of the New Fire to signify the return of Light. As the story from the Book of Genesis was read, we watched sparks fly up into a beautiful starry sky complete with the Paschal moon. When the newly lit Paschal candle was carried into the dark church, I was thinking about that angel with a fiery sword leading us into Paradise instead of keeping us out.
Like the lingering scent of lilies, Easter images keep reappearing in my mind’s eye.
