Keeping Perspective

by Sr Nunother

I have a confession to make.  I sweat the small stuff. We recently had a short lull at Bethany Guest House, and I was looking forward to an evening of computer catch-up.  It was going to be wonderful.  Just the computer and me – clean out e-mails, delete antiquated word perfect documents, and do some internet research on a study project.  Then along came a fly with a plan of its own.  It buzzed into my quiet zone as if annoyed at me for being there.  I shooed it away and went back to work . Undaunted, the fly approached from a different direction and landed near the computer screen.  I picked up a spiral-ringed note book – swing and a miss! As my frustration increased, so did my choice of weapons and none were effective. (Now I know why she swallowed that fly… it was the only way to get rid of it.)  After an hour of this, I was angry at the fly, the person who left the screen door open and in my new irrationality, God , who could have prevented the entire incident.  I turned off the computer and walked out onto Bethany patio. Rock Harbor was alive with fishing boats and summer vacationers, as the sun set over Cape Cod Bay in spectacular fashion.  My agenda and I shrunk in significance, message gratefully received.  The fly?  It continued on without me, last seen perched victoriously on the computer screen.

About Sr. Nun Other

May 16, 2012, completed my 30th year as a Sister. It was both a milestone and just another day in an interesting journey. Some of those thirty years included singing with Gloriae Dei Cantores, marching in Spirit of America band, and serving on our Sisters Council. As a monastic, I live surrounded by beauty and within a frame work of opportunity and possibility. I'm sixty-four (much to my surprise) and extremely grateful for my life as a sister - past, present, and future.
